Property-rights advocates saw a major victory in 2015, when the state of North Carolina reached an agreement to buy land near Hammocks Beach State Park from its rightful owners. The agreement ended a long-running court battle in which the state had attempted to take the land without any compensation of its private owners.
Attorney Ruth Sheehan of the Francis Law Firm, which represented the successful plaintiffs, shared details of the Hammocks Beach case Monday during a presentation on property rights and eminent domain for the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society.
