CHAPEL HILL – The man leading an effort to build an Islamic cultural center near ground zero in Manhattan spoke at UNC Wednesday night.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf gave a short speech then answered questions as part of the Weil lecture series. His plans to build the cultural center sparked national outrage. At one point the plan was to build a 16 story building in place of a Burlington Coat Factory store. The store suffered damage from landing gear of one of the planes flown into the World Trade Center.

The Christian Action Network followed Rauf to Chapel Hill. They had a 9/11 survivor and terror expert speak before holding a candle light vigil outside Rauf’s lecture.
