RALEIGH – A Republican legislator introduced a bill Tuesday to strengthen North Carolina’s DWI laws.

Laura’s Law would add a new category to the state’s current designations of DWI. It would be the strictest level of DWI. Suspects convicted under the proposed law could face added prison time, increased fines and longer periods under alcohol monitoring.

The bill is named for Laura Fortenberry. She’s a Gaston County teen killed last year in a drunk driving accident.

Rep. Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, is the bill’s primary sponsor.
