Education bill would require Computer Science and make Earth Science an elective

A measure to require students to take a computer science course prior to graduating high school passed through the North Carolina House Education Committee Feb. 14. The committee also passed a bill to revamp the governance structure of three schools for deaf and blind students, a bill vetoed by Gov. Cooper in 2022.

Speaker Moore announces NC House committee assignments

On Tuesday, North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, announced committee assignments. House Republicans have 71 out of 120 seats, and would need 72 out of 120 for a gubernatorial veto override. This will likely be a focus when issues that are especially partisan - abortion, 2nd Amendment laws, voter ID, tax policy - come before members.

Committee appointments released ahead of legislative session on Wednesday

Senate Leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, today announced his intended committee appointments for the 2023-24 legislative biennium. Sen. Jim Perry, R-Lenoir, was appointed to be a chair of the highly sought-after Senate Finance Committee.  In a post charged with writing the state budget, Sen. Michael Lee, R-New Hanover, is stepping in as chair of the Appropriations/Base Budget Committee.
