Ask a conservative to compile a top list of American political heroes, and you’ll not be surprised to see names such as Thomas Jefferson, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. The names Nathaniel Macon, Josiah Bailey, and John W. Davis might seem less obvious.

But all six men are profiled in Raleigh finance executive Garland Tucker’s latest book, Conservative Heroes: Fourteen Leaders Who Shaped America, From Jefferson to Reagan. Tucker shared highlights from the book Monday during a presentation for the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society. (C-SPAN2’s “Book TV” recorded the lecture for an upcoming cablecast.)

In the video clip below, Tucker outlines basic concepts that influenced each of his heroes.
