Conservatives might fare better in the next U.S. presidential race if they unite behind a single candidate early in the campaign process. National Review contributing editor Jim Geraghty offered that advice during a presentation Monday to the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society.

Promoting his new novel about unchecked growth within a relatively anonymous federal unit, The Weed Agency, Geraghty also took audience questions about topics he covers frequently in his National Review Online blog, “The Campaign Spot,” and the “Morning Jolt” email newsletter.

“Unify behind somebody fairly early,” Geraghty advised conservatives looking ahead to the 2016 presidential election. “Figure out who your guy is, and don’t let it get into months and months of the four or five guys fighting for the conservative mantle beating the hell out of each other with negative ads while the ‘establishment’ or moderate guy cruises through with no real competition.”
