The United States could have a constitutional balanced budget amendment within a year, if enough states back a process spelled out by the group Compact for America. Two states have endorsed the process, and CFA needs support from 36 more states to move forward.

Nick Dranias, the Phoenix, Ariz.-based president and executive director of CFA, delivered a progress report of the group’s work during a speech Monday for the John Locke Foundation and the Triangle Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society.

Dranias explained why ballooning federal debt in recent years makes quick action on a constitutional amendment critical. In the video clip below, he explains how CFA plans to address the many roadblocks tied to the constitutional amendment process.
